NUMERICAL ANALYSIS OF A FRICTIONAL IMPACT OSCILLATOR

Giovanni Lancioni
The dynamics of a two-dimensional system constituted by two masses subjected to elastic, gravitational and viscous forces and constrained by a moving frictional mono-lateral surface is investigated numerically by means of a self-made code. The model, capable of reproducing the hopping phenomenon of a windscreen wiper, exhibits a time-varying dynamics which has a non-smooth nature due to the impact and friction and is affected by geometrical non-linearities. Various periodic motions are found and the
dependence on the problem parameters, in particular on the friction coefficient, is investigated in detail.
