A Conspiracy of Oscillators

We discuss nonlinear mechanical systems containing several oscillators whose frequecies are mutually comparable, all much higher, than frequencies associated with the remaining degrees of freedom. In this situation a near constant of the motion, an adiabatic invariant, exists which is the sum of all the oscillator actions. The phenomenon is illustrated, and a connection to geometric phase (or isoholonomic) problems is suggested.
